Qualifications/ Fees for Tax Filings
Qualifications
I have finished my 2023 Tax season and am not accepting any new clients or doing prior years returns or amendments for non clients
Lots of people and places will file your taxes. Many of the national storefront firms use seasonal help, paying them $18 to $30 an hour and putting them thru a yearly tax refresher class. Real tax pros, including most CPAs and tax attorneys do fine work, but often it's the new staffer doing your return, not the experienced professional. These folks necessarily focus their time on larger clients, with complex tax issues.
As noted, while this is part-time for me, I am an MBA with an undergrad degree in Accounting and Systems and decades of experience. I do your taxes myself and have taken continuing education yearly and passed the IRS developed and and approved Annual Filing Season program for 11 years.
Based on the above we can represent you with the IRS on all returns we prepare and file. Further, we have also been vetted and passed their background checks and fingerprinting to assure we are properly qualified and trained to file your taxes electronically. Lastly, I use state of the art automated professional tax preparation software that automatically double checks my logic and other calculations. A few clients a year may receive an IRS letter about a missing form or advising an interest payment is due or there was some mismatch. But NONE of my clients have been ever audited by a taxing authority.
My PC systems are secured by fully updated hardware and software firewalls, anti-virus and anti-malware. I have a passed the CISA certification in information security and assure your data is encrypted with bank-level security. It is also fully backed up and complex password protected locally and on-line in a secure commercial data center.
Calculating Fees that I Charge
I am part-time and don't have an office or staff. Being semi-retired, I am able to discount my rates at least 33% over what you pay the average brick and mortar tax prep service to file your return. In the last 2 years, many tax prep fees went up 26% with another 15% jump expected this year. I took on 3 new clients last year and was able to reduce their tax prep charges from Tucson CPA's by 100%, saving them literally hundreds of dollars.
My base fees have gone up 45% over my 7 years of doing taxes here in Oro Valley. Covid related tax law changes, staffing shortages at the IRS and recent tax changes have greatly complicated tax preparation for all professional preparers. Of course, costs will vary, based on complexity and organization and quality of your documentation. Example include filers who have multiple homes, lots of investments, rental property, child care deductions, child tax credit, an added state return, earned income credit, sale of your home, etc. Some folks forget to provide forms or have to wait to get brokerage and other investment tax docs. However, most, like 75%, of my clients don't itemize. The clients who take the standard deduction and have SS, maybe pension, investments and savings, but not enough to itemize. Most clients who itemize often have one or more homes with good sized mortgages and larger property and state taxes, and/or medical and charitable deductions. I file over a 100 returns and my client list is very diverse. While many are straight foward, others own a business, have trusts. who own multiple homes, rentals, file in another state in addition to AZ and have multiple and diverse investments.
The rates below assume you have last year's returns available and an organized file of receipts and other records. Multiple income source and/or if I have to request prior returns, organize files, request documents multiple times or correct submitted information, my normal offsite rate of $90 an hour applies to perform these tasks for you.
Persons with similar experience charge $250 an hour, or more for their time. Existing tax issues and agreements, enforcement actions, deductions denied or corrected on prior returns are handled on a case by case manner, depending on the details involved. I do not deal with people who failed to file prior years returns without good cause.

2024 tax year average estimate filing costs
I am an active member of the National Association of TX Professional and active in the AZ chapter. The do an annual survey of tax preparation charges that is broken down a number of different ways. Factors include the preparers' certification (s). years of experience, area that they work in and the size of the city they practice in.
I review these reports in detail and because I don't have physical office for you to visit, staff to pay, health insurance and pension to fund, I set my fees at no higher than 65% of the average for similar tax pros. And remember, while you don't get free coffee, you always get me and don't have to drive in and drop off and pick up returns, often not seeing who did your return.
Simple 1040 and AZ State Return, without Itemized Deductions, My 2024 tax year fee $ 250
Simple 1040 and AZ State Return, with few Itemized Deductions, My 2023 tax year fee $ 350
Special If I do your return, I will e file the simple federal and state return for your dependent(s) for $125
Note that there are a lot of variables to consider and remember senior members in tax firms have their junior folks do simple returns that they simply review and sign off. They save their attention for business, trust and estate returns, managing staff and marketing the firm . These are standard return prices for usual situations. If you sold your home, have a diverse stock portfolio or IRA's at 6 different places, run a side business, etc there is a charge for that. Likewise it costs more if you keep finding documents or call with multiple questions, or have other tax issues.
Note that for 2024 returns I am charging a $50 start up fee to clients referred to me by existing clients. I will not be able to accept new clients for the 2024 that are not referred by existing clients. It takes time to get to know you, your return and enter the new data. I have a full array of tools to work with you remotely and can have video and telephone conferences to discuss you taxes, if you want this option. Email really works best however, there are few tax emergencies.
I have similar low fees on Schedule C returns for sole proprietor or LLC's. I also do Simple Trusts only on the 1041 form. But I refer you to others for the partnership, estate, Sub S and corporate tax returns as I don't see enough to be fully effective and proficient in filing these often complex returns.
Tax preparation costs and complexity rise every year. When I review your prior and current year taxes, I can give you a more accurate quote that is provided in writing. Engagement letters and a non refundable deposit of at least $100 or 50% of the estimated fee is required prior to my starting work on your taxes.
I can provide up to a free 15-minute initial phone consultation. Longer than that requires a charge of $25 per 15 minutes or portion there of. I also allow 10 minutes to discuss your situation when I pick up or drop off taxes. An onsite review of your taxes or tax planning is a $120 minimum , plus the $100 an hr charge over that time, for complex tax situations. Once we discuss your tax situation I can give you an estimate tailored to your particular situation. You are always advised as to my process, progress and must provide formal approval prior to my filing any returns. It's YOUR return, after all. I am just gathering and submitting your return in compliance with all laws and regulations.
